Stagehand Omari operating the puppets
Progress photo

Two photos of a set of large spider mandibles that I made for Puffs (or Seven Increasingly Eventful Years at a Certain School of Magic and Magic) by Matt Cox. On the left is a demonstration of how they were used as puppets, Omari (pictured) would stand off stage and let the mandibles creep on stage slowly like they were attached to a larger spider. Aesthetically, the director wanted all of the prop and set elements to look like they were constructed, so they didn’t necessarily need to look realistic or organic. I constructed these out of dowels, with some splints to help support their weight, and wrapped them with gaff tape and then rope to finish. I used spray paint to color and texture them, and later in the process, I added small pads onto the operational ends and some gaff tape grips for operator comfort.

Hermione wig on lamp base

Also for Puffs, this is “Hermione” as a mop head on a lamp stand. This is a running gag throughout the play, and Hermione comes on and off stage frequently. I made this with a lamp base and a mop head that I cut bangs into and then decorated with tinsel braids and a ribbon bow at the back. She is tied and glued onto the stand for maximum durability.

“C” Badges

A set of nine “Pro-Cedric” badges made for Puffs. I made these from the bottoms of soda cans, spray-painted gold and with the letter “C” drawn on with sharpie. As with the spider mandibles, the director wanted everything to look like it was scraped together, and the can bottoms helped accomplish this arts-and-crafts look. They each have a flat pin backing on them so the actors could easily wear and remove them.

Antigone – Lectern | Centenary Theatre Program | 2023

Front view of Lectern
Angled view of Lectern

This was a lectern that I designed, built, and painted for a production of Antigone by Sophocles wherein the director was portraying King Creon as a presidential figure. The body of the lectern is a 2×4 frame covered with luan, and the base is made of 2×4 as well. the top of the lectern is made of plywood, and the seal on the front is a printed out image adhered to a small circle to give it depth.

Dancing at Lughnasa – Rooster | Centenary Theatre Program | 2022

Hanging rooster
Rooster laying down

A headless rooster I made for Centenary’s production of Dancing at Lughnasa by Brian Friel. I constructed the rooster from a stuffed cloth body and hand sewed each real feather onto it, following natural feather growth patterns. The feet are made of wire covered in oven-bake clay, and the rooster is spattered with fake blood and red and brown paint to give the appearance of bite wounds from a fox. The wattle on the neck of the rooster is made of a red latex balloon.

A string of severed toes made for a production of an excerpt from The Pillowman by Martin McDonagh. The toes are made out of oven-bake clay and colored with alcohol ink.

Street Sign for The Triangle Factory Fire Project by Christopher Piehler and Scott Alan Evans | 2020

I created this street sign for a UIL One Act Play production of The Triangle Factory Fire Project. I cut both signs out of 3/4″ plywood with a jigsaw and painted and lettered the signs by hand. Both were then attached to a steel street post that we had in stock.
